Terms & Conditions

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing boukenjj.com, submitting a booking, or completing payment for the Bouken Jiu-Jitsu Escape Camp (the "Camp"), you ("Participant," "you," or "your") agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions ("Terms") in their entirety. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use this website or submit a booking. These Terms are provided by Drew Weatherhead ("Bouken," "we," "us," or "the Organizer"), based in Alberta, Canada, and form a binding contract between you and us.

2. The Camp — Offering and Dates

Bouken is a 10-day Jiu-Jitsu and adventure experience in Japan. The inaugural Camp runs October 22–31, 2026, with stops in Tokyo, Toyama, and Kobe. The Camp includes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo training sessions at select dojos, cultural activities (e.g., Kyudo Japanese Archery, shrine visits, sightseeing), group meals, and bullet-train travel between cities. Full itineraries for Toyama and Kobe will be communicated to registered participants. Specific training venues, timings, activities, and accommodations are subject to change at the Organizer's reasonable discretion. Changes to the itinerary do not entitle Participants to a refund unless the Camp is cancelled in its entirety by the Organizer.

3. Eligibility

3a. Age: You must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the Camp. By completing a booking, you represent that you meet this requirement. 3b. Passport and visa: You are solely responsible for holding a valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond October 31, 2026, and for obtaining any travel visas required to enter Japan and any transit countries. 3c. Physical fitness: Participation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo training involves sustained physical exertion and full-contact grappling. By booking, you represent and warrant that you are in adequate physical condition to participate in contact martial-arts training and international travel, that you are not aware of any medical condition that would make such participation inadvisable, and that you have consulted a physician if you have any doubt. The Organizer may ask a Participant to obtain medical clearance as a condition of participation. 3d. Travel insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance — including coverage for trip cancellation, medical evacuation, emergency medical treatment, and personal liability — is strongly recommended and may be required as a condition of participation. The Organizer is not responsible for your failure to obtain adequate insurance.

4. Booking and Payment

The Camp price is USD $6,999 per person. Spots are strictly limited to 10 participants and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. A Camp spot is confirmed only upon receipt of full payment via the PayPal payment button on this site. No spot is held, reserved, or guaranteed without full payment. By completing payment through PayPal, you (a) confirm you have read and agree to these Terms in full, and (b) acknowledge that your payment transaction is also governed by PayPal's User Agreement and Privacy Policy. We do not store your payment card information. All payment processing is handled by PayPal. If you experience issues with your payment, contact PayPal directly.

5. Cancellation, Refunds, and Transfers

Because the Camp has only 10 spots, held on a first-come basis, all payments are non-refundable once a spot is confirmed, except as set out below. Transfers: If you are unable to attend, you may transfer your spot to another eligible participant (18+, meeting all eligibility requirements) with our prior written approval, at no additional fee. You are responsible for any payment arrangements with your substitute. If the Organizer cancels: If we cancel the Camp in its entirety, you will receive a full refund of the amount you paid to us (see Section 7). How to cancel or transfer: Send written notice to contact@boukenjj.com. The effective date is the date we receive your notice. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that includes trip-cancellation coverage in case circumstances require you to cancel.

6. Assumption of Risk and Release

Inherent risks of martial-arts training: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo are full-contact martial arts. Training involves grappling, submissions, throws, takedowns, and ground fighting, and carries inherent risks including, without limitation: strains, sprains, bruises, fractures, dislocations, concussion, and other serious injuries. Inherent risks of international travel: Travelling to and within Japan involves risks including, without limitation: illness, injury, accident, loss of property, flight delays or cancellations, political instability, natural disasters, and other unforeseen events. Voluntary participation: By booking, you acknowledge that you understand and appreciate these risks, that you are voluntarily choosing to participate, and that you assume all inherent risks associated with Jiu-Jitsu training and international travel. Release: To the fullest extent permitted by law, you release Drew Weatherhead and the Camp's organizers, instructors, contractors, and agents from any claim, injury, loss, or damage arising from the inherent risks of Jiu-Jitsu training, physical activity, or travel during the Camp, except to the extent caused by our gross negligence or willful misconduct. You may also be required to sign a separate participant waiver before training begins.

7. Organizer Cancellation and Changes

We reserve the right to modify the itinerary, training venues, activities, schedule, or accommodations due to operational requirements, venue availability, safety concerns, or circumstances beyond our reasonable control. If the Organizer cancels the Camp in its entirety (for example, due to force majeure, insufficient enrollment, or safety concerns), registered Participants will receive a full refund of amounts paid directly to us. We are not responsible for Participants' non-refundable flights, travel costs, independently booked accommodation, or any other expenses. Travel insurance covering trip cancellation is strongly recommended. Force majeure: Neither party is liable for delay or failure to perform caused by events beyond their reasonable control, including acts of God, natural disasters, earthquake, fire, flood, epidemic or pandemic, war, terrorism, civil unrest, government orders or travel advisories, strikes, or failure of essential infrastructure.

8. Conduct and Removal

All Participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the spirit of the Camp: respectful, collaborative, and safe. The Organizer may remove a Participant from the Camp at any time for conduct that the Organizer, in its reasonable discretion, determines to be dangerous, threatening, disruptive, illegal, or incompatible with the safety and enjoyment of other Participants. A Participant removed for conduct reasons is not entitled to a refund. The Organizer is not responsible for any costs incurred as a result of early departure, including flights, accommodation, or travel changes.

9. Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend — and may require as a condition of participation — that all Participants obtain comprehensive travel insurance before the Camp, including coverage for: - Trip cancellation and interruption; - Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization; - Medical evacuation and repatriation; - Loss, theft, or damage of baggage and personal property; - Personal liability. The Organizer is not liable for losses that could have been covered by travel insurance.

10. Passport, Visa, and Entry Requirements

Each Participant is solely responsible for: - Holding a valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond October 31, 2026; - Obtaining any visas or travel authorizations required to enter Japan and any transit countries; - Complying with all immigration, customs, and entry requirements; - Ensuring their vaccination or health documentation meets any requirements in effect at the time of travel. The Organizer is not responsible for Participants who are denied entry to Japan or any transit country, and no refund will be issued on that basis. Check with the Japanese embassy or consulate for your country for current entry requirements.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Drew Weatherhead and his organizers, instructors, employees, contractors, and agents are not liable for: - Any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or in connection with your participation in the Camp, your use of this website, or these Terms; - Any personal injury, illness, death, loss, or damage to property arising out of or in connection with Camp activities, travel, or accommodation; - Any failure or delay caused by force majeure or circumstances outside our reasonable control. Our total aggregate liability to you, for any cause whatsoever and regardless of the form of action, will not exceed the amount you paid to us for Camp participation. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our gross negligence or willful misconduct, or for fraud, to the extent such limitation is not permitted by applicable law.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Drew Weatherhead and his organizers, instructors, employees, contractors, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or in connection with: (a) your breach of these Terms; (b) your violation of any applicable law or regulation; (c) your conduct during the Camp; or (d) any third-party claim arising from your actions or omissions.

13. Intellectual Property

All content on boukenjj.com, including text, photographs, graphics, and branding, is owned by or licensed to Drew Weatherhead and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. 14. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Alberta, Canada, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms or your participation in the Camp is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Alberta, Canada. Nothing in this clause limits any rights you may have under mandatory consumer-protection laws in your country or jurisdiction of residence.

15. Dispute Resolution

If you have a dispute with us, please contact us first at contact@boukenjj.com. We will make reasonable efforts to resolve disputes informally and in good faith within 30 days of receiving written notice. If the dispute cannot be resolved informally, either party may pursue the remedies available in the courts of Alberta, Canada, as specified in Section 14.

16. International Participants

The Camp is open to participants worldwide. By booking from outside Canada, you acknowledge that these Terms are governed by the law of Alberta, Canada, and that any dispute will be resolved in Canadian courts, except where mandatory consumer-protection laws in your home jurisdiction provide otherwise. Participants from the European Union retain consumer rights under EU law that cannot be waived by contract. Nothing in these Terms is intended to deprive EU consumers of rights to which they are entitled by mandatory EU law.

17. Severability and Entire Agreement

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable in any jurisdiction, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. These Terms, together with any separate waiver or participant agreement we provide, constitute the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Camp and supersede all prior communications, representations, or agreements.
